Get Short(y) Films

June 2, 2006 Posted by fluffylogic in : Bristol , trackback

Some are pointing to a resurgence for the short film: The Oscar winning filmmaker Jane Campion has just completed a short film United Nation’s development project on its millennium goals. She told the Guardian, “But they are not inferior, just different. I think the short gives a freedom to film-makers. What’s appealing is that you don’t have as much responsibility for storytelling and plot. They can be more like a portrait, or a poem.” A similarly suggested resurgence also happened not to long ago upon the release of the Anamatrix - the series of nine short films releases as part few the sci-fi film arc, The Matrix. The truth is that for some time now the short film has been a staple of entertainment on digital formats. Whether you are talking short sequences that drive the narrative of a computer game (called FMV or ‘Full Motion Video’ in the games development world) or short web films that populate in boxes the world over. The real position of shorts films globally is reflected in Bristol’s culture where the short has not been sold short.

Here in Bristol, we not only do shorts, we do them digitally and online! From Brief Encounters to plugincinema.com (shameless plug) to the 90 Second Film Challenge to Digital Stories - Bristol knows shorts and Bristol does shorts well. Another reason why Bristol is a digital city. [FluffyLogic.net]
