Geeks in the Park on Accessibility
November 30, 2006 Posted by Laura in : Digital Challenge, Innovation, Media, Learning, Skills , add a commentHello Accessible Web Developers and those who want to be,
This excellent podcast from the “Geek in the Park” event on accessibility.
If you’re looking for some good in depth discussion of accessibility then this is brilliant. Topics include:
- Accessible browser technology
- Web developers adding accessibility functionality where perhaps User Agents should fulfill the role
- Accessibility vs business/branding requirements
I could go on but I don’t want this to turn into an essay, anyway I thought I should pass this on.

On the buses
November 28, 2006 Posted by Clare in : Digital Challenge, Bristol, Transport , 3 commentsI have been contacted by Dan C, via Underscore, with a practical idea to help Bristol become more digital. He saw a post on the Google blogs regarding Google Transit, where bus timetables have been added to Google Maps, so when you’re planning a route it will give you the public transport, walking and driving options for getting from A to B and will mark the routes on a map.
A few cities in the US are currently served (including California and Hawaii) and Dan was suggesting Bristol could be the first city in the UK to join in. I think this is a great idea - I know we are already talking to First Bus and Bristol City Council already has a journey planner on Travel Bristol, so this may be something we could pursue.
Any thoughts?

Eurocities Award for Participation

Bristol City Council Leader Barbara Janke and Stephen Hilton, collecting the award.
Although there have been a couple of posts already (this one and this one) covering the Eurocities Conference in Manchester its probably worth stretching your patience with a third to mention the fact that we did in fact win the Eurocities Award for Participation with the Campaign Creator project.
Here is a pic of the trophy I took with the webcam on my MacBook. It looks a lot more splendid in real life.

Knowle West Media Centre meets Lesley Belgium

30 October 2006
I met with Lesley Belgium. Lesley told me that her children help her if something goes wrong with the computer, or if she has any issues with using it, such as accessing different things on line. She said that she really relies on her children, especially her daughter, to access the internet and do the things she wants to do with it.
One of the main ways Lesley uses the internet is to have contact with her family in Australia. She said that she found such exchange really beneficial, because of the speed with which she can communicate with her family compared to how long it used to take for a letter to reach them. However, she told me that one issues for her is that she doesn’t always check her email regularly, and so sometimes when people expect an immediate response to email, they don’t get it from her. We talked about how people have different uses of things like email and consequently have different expectations of each other’s uses.
Lesley said that she also finds shopping on line very useful, especially when trying to buy specialist items, such as craft shop things and materials for making jewellery. She told me that it’s brilliant to be able to go on line and just order such things without having to make a special journey or traipse around town all day.
