Wireless mapping
November 3, 2006 Posted by Clare in : Digital Challenge, Wireless, Bristol , trackback
Ever wondered where in Bristol you can wirelessly access the web for free? Cityspace runs a large free to access Wi Fi network in the city centre. They have used Google Earth to create a map of their coverage. You can look at a full size screengrab of their Streetnet coverage map here or download the Google Earth file.
Connecting Bristol and SubSub are also taking up the wireless mapping challenge and are in the process of producing a map of all of the open wireless networks in the city. People will be able to upload their own networks and see where the coverage blackspots are. Watch this space.

thanks for this useful article.
imo bristol still isnt covered well enough by wifi in general
I live in culver house on park street/culver street. I can't get wifi. Can anyone explain why, as our halls landlords (Unite housing) are extremely stingy pricewise when it comes to internet.

wow, either harsh, or effortlessly hoaxed.
Hi, we're on Jacobs Wells Road.. this evening my 'View Available Networks' in XP picked up 'Free Public WiFi - On Demand'
Curious.
Is this you guys? We are out of range afaik.
Only found this site tonight since searching for a source.
Those maps are in-accuret as the wifi signal can be affected by different factors such as buildings, magnetic wiring or other magnetic things can extend the singal further. where as solid concrete buildings will block signals
so the "circle" area of signal isnt circle at all, its more random shaped, its a bit hit & miss of where you pick the signal up from
also, if you can pick it up but are out of range, just get a tin foil cake holder thing and put it around your wireless thingy like a satilite like shape, then point it in the right direction and u get a more focussed stronger signal
Okay it's strange phenomenon.

Basically it's someone making a sad attempt to hack.
No tin foil hats, no pringles, just dumb hackers.
