February 17, 2007 Posted by Clare in : Digital Challenge, Wireless, Bristol, Connecting Bristol , add a commentOn 24 and 25 February 2007, the OpenStreetMap team of volunteers will be adding Bristol to the global mapping revolution. Contributors to the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project are meeting in Bristol with the aim of completely mapping the streets and other major features of the city.
Anyone wishing to take part in the mapping weekend are asked to meet at Watershed, 1 Canons Road, Bristol at 10.00 am on either or both days to collect GPS mapping units before going their separate ways to map the city for the rest of the day, with a brief get-together for lunch at convenient pubs. In addition, participants will also be contributing to gathering data for Connecting Bristol’s Wi-Map project, which is currently mapping open wireless networks around the city.

I met with Denise Britt. Denise told me about having taken part in a digital storytelling project with KWMC. Denise said that she had made a digital story based on why she started doing volunteer work. The story was about her life and the impact that volunteering has had on her. Denise explained that she started doing volunteer work to help people who needed help. The first thing she did was to raise money for someone with Cerebral Palsy to fund a trip for him to go to the Peto institute in Hungary. The visit to the Peto Institute was intended to aid the boy in learning to walk and it was quite successful as he did learn to walk. Denise explained how she had done the fundraising with a friend of hers and how they had organised an event in a room at the City ground on valentine day and evening. This event raised money, as did an event at the Venture when there was also a fun day at the front of the school by The Venture, which included an auction, a sports event for young people and a disco in the evening. This event raised about £2000.

I met with Doug Coombs at the Knowle West Development Trust. Doug began by talking about the fantastic potential there is for new media, whether through text, images, photos or video. However, what concerns him is the situation regarding the have and have-nots, and how this situation basically comes down to money.
Doug told me that he liked the idea of accessing ‘pods’ where people can access new media in cafes and youth centres and other public spaces. Doug talked about this as being one way of overcoming the fear some people may have of the computer, in order to reach more people.
Doug talked about the need to overcome barriers in order for people to want to utilise new media:
1 Financial barriers
2 People’s fear of using new media
