Nice points Sam.

Vista - the latest desktop operating system from Redmond's finest - requires 0.5G of memory just to sit there and do nothing. Talk about bloat!

Don't forget too that there are special lightweight Linux distributions out there specifically designed to run on older kit. So if by chance you happen to have an old PII lying around gathering dust, it can be given a new lease of life.

Getting a longer service life out of equipment is also important since it means natural resources stay in the ground instead of being depleted: we only have one small planet at our disposal and are so far doing a rather good job at messing it up.

When planning a green computing initiative the choice of operating system can be an important choice.

A new comparisson shows that a Linux operating system can save up 12% of your power consumption as compared to Microsoft's latest server operating system.
