Interesting project. I used to work for CARTC who were part of the EC market transformation programme on energy efficiency. Basically I went around measuring power consumption from home electrical appliances! Know a great guy called Bob who's into all this (http://www.eeph.org.uk). Some interesting observations - such as flat panels using less power than CRTs. There are lots of initiatives around reducing consumption of devices (standby-power, using ECO PC functions, power throttling etc). I highly recommend this : http://www.oneclickpower.com/ (actually I have one of the first prototypes at home :)) A simple household solution would be a "master" switch to turn off all sockets and lights when you go out.....
