Will 2009 be the Year of Superfast Broadband?

“When we talk about the roads and the bridges and the railways that were built in previous times – and those were anti-recession measures taken to help people through difficult times – you could [by comparison] talk about the digital infrastructure and that form of communications revolution at a period when we want to stimulate the economy. It’s a very important thing.”

So said Gordon Brown in his New Year interview with the Observer.

According to Brown, school repairs, new rail links, hospital projects and plans to usher in a new digital age by investing in superfast broadband will be used to keep unemployment down. The plans will also be used to tackle climate change, by means of investments in eco-friendly projects such as electric cars and wind and wave power that would also create jobs.

Next Generation (superfast) Broadband and Green ICT initiatives are two of the Core Themes that Connecting Bristol and the DC10plus have been championing… clearly the message is starting to get through!

  • I hope the message starts to get through. For years now we have been hearing SWRDA and the likes saying how important high speed broadband is, yet not willing to put any investment into it.
