Festival of Ideas

12 May 09, 19.30-20.30
Watershed Media Centre, Bristol

The way we live has apparently been transformed by text messaging, email and Facebook. How did this start and, if it can change our behaviour, can it also change the way we think? James Harkin, ICA Director of Talks and author of Cyburbia, describes how the architecture of our digital lives was built over 70 years. Encompassing the work of crackpots, inventors and visionaries, it shows how a concept that began with the need to shoot down German bombers has evolved to govern almost everything; from our lives online, to modern films like Memento and 21 Grams, from TV shows and plays to military strategy. Following his presentation, James will be in discussion with Helen Kennedy, School of Creative Arts, University of the West of England.
