One could always use a proper operating system such as Linux that organises its files sensibly and thus doesn't need defragmentation. Linux also has lower hardware requirements: I have two laptops, both 6 years old and with a mere 256 MB of RAM each, that are happily running the latest version of Debian that one couldn't even consider for Redmond's latest offerings.
