SimplicITy: computing designed for older people

by Kevin on November 12, 2009 · Comments

The simplicITy computer has been launched to target people over 50 who are inexperienced with, or nervous about, technology. It has with a very simplified user interface, which offers clear, straightforward choices, such as ‘Send an email’ or ‘Browse the web’, at the click of a button. The system comes packaged with a range of video tutorials presented by ex-Blue Peter presenter Valery Singleton.

It may prove valuable in introducing some older users to the opportunities that new technology offers, but is there a danger that older people might be expected to occupy the slow lane on the Information Superhighway? Is the simplicITy making technology more accessible or is it dumbing it down? Is it more inclusive to work on making customary technologies more relevant to older people, and providing appropriate training and support rather than modifying their experience?
