Social media has been the standout success story at the heart of Web 2.0. It’s brought us opportunities to connect and collaborate with colleagues, old school friends and professional networks, as well as any number of niche interest offerings (69,000 people have joined the ‘Physics Doesn’t Exist, Its All Gnomes‘ Facebook group).

The number of people worldwide who are actively involved in social networking is vast; so huge in fact that it can be a major conceptual task to process it. The video below gives a comparative illustration of the order of magnitude we are talking about, and the impact it is having, not only on our social lives, but on how we interact with businesses and other service providers

It's frightening to see the growth in social media - remember that this video was from up to July 09, so you can bet that the figures have moved on a lot. For instance LinkedIn is apparently moving along at 1 million new sign ups every 12 days!

But let's not get hung up about huge numbers, I happen to think that social media's most powerful attribute is being able to target key audiences in a highly effective way and to a hyper-local level.
