International Telecommunications Union Global ICT Statistics

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technology issues. It publishes a huge rage of statistics about ICT and its impact across the world, as well as promoting international good practice in areas such as Accessibility, Next Generation Broadband and  ICT and climate change.

Some of the more interesting facts and figures published in a recent document include;

  • Mobile cellular technology has been the most rapidly adopted technology in history. Today it is the most popular and widespread personal tech on the planet, with an estimated 4.6 billion subscriptions globally
  • Mobile broadband subscriptions overtook fixed broadband subscribers in 2008, highlighting the huge potential for the mobile Internet
  • More than a quarter of the world’s population are using the Internet
  • Three quarters of households globally have a TV
  • Over a quarter of the world’s population – or 1.9 billion people –have access to a computer at home
  • In Africa, there is only one fixed broadband subscriber for every 1000 people, while in Europe there are 200 subscribers for 1000 people
