Bristol to pioneer Local TV service

by Kevin on December 14, 2011 · View Comments

Bristol will be in the first wave of Cities starting up local TV services. The Government has announced that an initial cohort of 20 Cities could have stations operating by 2014, with a further 24 to follow later.

These local TV channels could deliver a range of new content to viewers such as;

  • “hyper local” news
  • Student films
  • Local music, comedy and theatre
  • School and college sports reports

The legislation enabling the stations to operate is still to be passed, but the Government hopes that the first local stations will be licenced around summer 2012.

  • I would just like to point out that this is not the first time that Bristol has had its own local TV service, so there is no way that the latest government announcement concerning Bristol deserves the verb 'to pioneer'.

    Back in the 1970s, Rediffusion operated Bristol TV, which was inaugurated on 17th May 1973 by government minister, Sir John Eden.

    Thanks for the link Woodsy- I was aware of the Rediffusion service but it was good to read a bit more about it. Its worth pointing that although the service is no longer available the ducts that Rediffusion laid in the City have been largely reused to house an extensive fibre optic network.

    The pioneering bit here is that Bristol is in the first tranche of Cities rolling out a service under the new legislation.
