OpenDyslexic Font improves online readability for people with dyslexia

OpenDyslexic is a typeface developed to try and assist dyslexic users who have issues reading online text. You can see if the font is helpful to you at the demo page.

The font is Open Source and free to download and use (but requires attribution for reuse).

If you find it useful, you can install on your own PC as the default font. If you have Windows 7 this is the process (best not to try this unless you are pretty confident tinkering with your Registry).

  1. Download the font
  2. Extract the font to your desktop
  3. Navigate to C:/Windows/Fonts in explorer
  4. Drag the extracted files from your desktop to C:/Windows/Fonts.
  5. Open notepad, and paste the following code in:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts] "Segoe UI (TrueType)"="" "Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)"="" "Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)"="" "Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)"="" "Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)"="" "Segoe UI Light (TrueType)"="" "Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)"=""
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes] "Segoe UI"="OpenDyslexic"

  6. Save the file as RandomeName.reg
  7. Right click on this new reg file, and hit merge. This changes the registry and makes it so that whenever it sees the Windows default user interface font, it changes it to OpenDyslexic.
