Conversation between Carolyn Hassan of Knowle West Media Centre and Matt Little, Director of Creative Partnerships Bristol

Creative Partnerships (CP) is a government initiative focussed on making schools more creative places by establishing partnerships between them and the wider community and creative sector. CP have been working with schools in Bristol since 2003.

I met with Matt to discuss what he thought the main issues were in terms of Creative Partnerships’ work with schools in relation to the concept of “Connecting Bristol.” KWMC has worked closely with CP on a range of digital media projects in schools in Knowle West through the Blueboard Project - a collaboration with three other community production companies; Calling the Shots, First Born Creatives and Suited and Booted. CP has also been involved with KWMC in a range of other ways too: helping establish the NLarge young photographers group (a model that has since spread to other parts of the country), and through general networking and mutual support dating back to the early days of the initiative.

Joining the Dots between Media Education and Community Engagement

I thought the Fresh 6 film event at the weekend was excellent and a real credit to Sam Burkey and all who helped organise it from Calling the Shots, Knowle West Media Centre, Suited and Booted and Firstborn Creatives, and all the young people who made the final decisions. At various times I was on the script surgeries table - giving advice to people on their film ideas, overseeing the library archive screenings and on the welcome table. (more…)

Home help in Knowle West

Innovative developments just seem to keep happening south of the Avon with news that Knowle West Web and Future Learning have succeeded in securing funding to employ a part-time tutor to teach Knowle West Web users and residents in their own homes how to surf the internet and use email, as well as answering any technical queries they may have.

The scheme’s promoters are also keen to know what other things Knowle West Webbers want to learn, since plenty of courses are available locally, along with information, advice and guidance that may be of use to potential learners.

Anyone interested in tuition is asked to get in touch by calling free on 08000 24 24 00 or filling in the Knowle West Web contact form.

Local Democracy Week

October 27, 2006 Posted by carolhayward in : Education, Digital Challenge, e-democracy, Bristol City Council , add a comment

Last week was the national initiative, Local Democracy Week, which aims to improve understanding of local democracy, particularly with young people.

In Bristol, we’ve taken part in the 2-week online activity, I’m a councillor, get me out of here for the last two years and this year was a bumper year with 6 local councillors and about 15 Bristol schools taking part through their citizenship classes - 3 times more than the last couple of years.

Councillors posted manifestos then were quizzed by students who vote for the councillor they like the most. The first week focused on the questions, then voting took place every day last week to evict a councillor until the winner was announced on Friday afternoon. All four political parties were represented with the final winner being Cllr Jon Rogers.

A podcast of the launch event that took place at the City Learning Centres in Brislington and Whitefield/Fishponds will hopefully be available soon. Congratulations to Jon and thanks to all those who helped make this such a successful event.
