Lesley Belgium
30 October 2006

I met with Lesley Belgium. Lesley told me that her children help her if something goes wrong with the computer, or if she has any issues with using it, such as accessing different things on line. She said that she really relies on her children, especially her daughter, to access the internet and do the things she wants to do with it.

One of the main ways Lesley uses the internet is to have contact with her family in Australia. She said that she found such exchange really beneficial, because of the speed with which she can communicate with her family compared to how long it used to take for a letter to reach them. However, she told me that one issues for her is that she doesn’t always check her email regularly, and so sometimes when people expect an immediate response to email, they don’t get it from her. We talked about how people have different uses of things like email and consequently have different expectations of each other’s uses.

Lesley said that she also finds shopping on line very useful, especially when trying to buy specialist items, such as craft shop things and materials for making jewellery. She told me that it’s brilliant to be able to go on line and just order such things without having to make a special journey or traipse around town all day.

Knowle West Media Centre meets Chris Pickering

26 October 2006

I travelled to KWMC where I met with Chris Pickering, Director of Future Learning, a social enterprise providing training opportunities in Knowle West. Chris told me about his involvement with Knowle West Web and how he has worked closely with Kevin and Diane Jeffries to support them in putting local people on line.

Chris talked about Knowle West and said that the day has gone when you could get local people to go into spaces for training. He told me that he thinks that local people want less consultation and more action. He said that, instead of trying to get people to attend training sessions, the emphasis needs to be on going into people’s homes to work with them.

Chris told me that he has recently obtained funding from UKonline for someone to go around door-to-door to do training in internet and email and also to help people work out how they can use digital technology to ends that are useful to them. He said that Steve Woods of Bristol Wireless has been doing this to a certain extent already.

Conversation between Carolyn Hassan of Knowle West Media Centre and Matt Little, Director of Creative Partnerships Bristol

Creative Partnerships (CP) is a government initiative focussed on making schools more creative places by establishing partnerships between them and the wider community and creative sector. CP have been working with schools in Bristol since 2003.

I met with Matt to discuss what he thought the main issues were in terms of Creative Partnerships’ work with schools in relation to the concept of “Connecting Bristol.” KWMC has worked closely with CP on a range of digital media projects in schools in Knowle West through the Blueboard Project - a collaboration with three other community production companies; Calling the Shots, First Born Creatives and Suited and Booted. CP has also been involved with KWMC in a range of other ways too: helping establish the NLarge young photographers group (a model that has since spread to other parts of the country), and through general networking and mutual support dating back to the early days of the initiative.

Joining the Dots between Media Education and Community Engagement

I thought the Fresh 6 film event at the weekend was excellent and a real credit to Sam Burkey and all who helped organise it from Calling the Shots, Knowle West Media Centre, Suited and Booted and Firstborn Creatives, and all the young people who made the final decisions. At various times I was on the script surgeries table - giving advice to people on their film ideas, overseeing the library archive screenings and on the welcome table. (more…)
