Flushed Away premiere

November 3, 2006 Posted by Clare in : Bristol, South Bristol, Media , add a comment

Bristol Oscar winners Aardman are staging a special premiere screening of Flushed Away, their brand new computer-animated comedy, in aid of Knowle West Media Centre.

Taking place at Cineworld in Hengrove on Friday 24 November, the screening will allow Bristol audiences to see the film before anyone else.
All money raised from the screening will go towards Knowle West Media Centre new building which will be environmentally sustainable, with low energy use, rain water harvesting and walls made of straw, helping Knowle West to be a leader in communities ‘going green.’

David Sproxton of Aardman said
‘We’re delighted to be able to help Knowle West Media Centre raise money with this special premiere of Flushed Away. The centre is in urgent need of a new building and we’re hoping for a sold-out screening to raise as much money as we can.’

Tickets for the screening are £8 adults / £6 concessions and all proceeds will be donated to Knowle West Media Centre. To book your tickets, call the Cineworld on 01275 831130.

Dialogue 3: Roz Hall of Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) meets Louise Elliott, Clive Harry and Emma Hinton, The Park: 9 October 2006

I travelled to The Park to meet with Louise Elliott, Emma Hinton and Clive Harry. Clive told me that he is manager of The Park as a whole, and that Emma and Louise manage all the education activities for 11 to 19 year olds. Clive explained that he works to ensure that the different elements of work at The Park come together coherently to contribute to the regeneration process. The Park has therefore been running a substantial programme with young people since it began in 2000. He went on to explain that young people’s achievement is a high priority in the local community. Knowle West Community Contribution No 2

Dialogue 2: Mandy Shute, Knowle West Neighbourhood Management: 10 October 2006

Mandy Shute from the Knowle West Neighbourhood Management team arrived for our meeting and we began to discuss the digital challenge bid. Mandy told me that there had been a scheme whereby Neighbourhood renewal had a fund which paid for residents to have computers at home with internet connections. The scheme paid for the computers and £10 a month towards the cost of their internet connection. She said that this was important to ensure that the neighbourhood renewal team could have communication with local people so that things like minutes of meetings to be e-mailed and approved. The scheme was relevant for about 7 or 8 residents who were involved in renewal. She also told me that there is a fund that has allowed the team to publish their newsletter as a website.

Mandy talked about the issues forum that KWMC are establishing as an online opportunity for people to comment on local issues and she said that she thought this would be an important space for people to communicate through.

Archimedia plans by architects White Design.
Awareness for Knowle West Media Centre’s Straw Bale Panel Initiative will be raised at the Knowle West environmental awareness event, taking place at the Health Park, Downton Road, Knowle West on Thursday 26 October from 2.15 pm– 5 pm. The first panel will be built by staff during the day and will be on show at KWMC Leinster House, Leinster Avenue The Knowle West.A team from the Media Centre will display a straw bale panel constructed that morning, as an example of how Archimedia, their new environmentally friendly home, will be constructed. The simple straw and timber constructions work in a similar way to the Ikea flat pack system, and are lime rendered after construction to make them fire and weatherproof. The building will be a flagship in environmental design and has involved young people and the community in the planning and the decision making process right from the start.

Local people will be invited to take part in building the new Media Centre and businesses and organisations will be able to sponsor a panel:

“The new building will enable us to extend and develop our work in the community… We believe that our work will contribute enormously to the cultural, economic and social development of the area. Plus we produce good work that the community are proud of,” Carolyn Hassan, Director, KWMC
