SkillSwap is a monthly event for people from the local new media community swap skills around a subject that interests them.

The events are intended to allow community members to share skills, help keep training costs down and do a little networking/socialising. The December event is supported by Connecting Bristol and features Sam Michel from Chinwag, talking about his 10 biggest mistakes when running a digital media company.

At the heart of the Connecting Bristol bid is the Momentum Group – a ‘movement’ and a stakeholder body uniting political leaders, council departments, creative industries, educationalists, health, police and fire, technology experts, academics and the public, private, voluntary and community sectors in a dialogue about the city’s digital future.

This meeting will look at the specific ways in which the Momentum group can contribute to Connecting Bristol as it develops. It is free and open to anyone to attend.

From blogging and forums to community internet and local television – is community-produced content the answer to creating a relevant online experience? Carolyn Hassan of Knowle West Media Centre and Dick Penny of Watershed host this public discussion event to explore projects in Bristol and discuss ideas for the future.

Connecting Bristol - Capital of WiFi, 11 January 2006, Watershed
Since November 2004, Bristol has had the UK’s largest outdoor wireless network: StreetNet covers approximately three square kilometers, providing access to the Internet and email, access for workers to private networks while working around the city and wireless connectivity for CCTV and general security surveillance. Is free access to high-speed internet a basic civil amenity? Does StreetNet meet the needs of Bristol residents and should it be rolled out across the city? Should the provision of wireless networks be community or corporate led? Pete Ferne of Bristol Wireless, Stuart Martin of Mobile Bristol and Ayleen Driver of the Local Education Authority host a public discussion event around how wireless is currently supplied and used in Bristol and its future potential.

Electric December is an online digital advent calendar which reflects the digital creativity and talent resident in Bristol. Electric December seeks to introduce local community and education groups to professional media companies, film makers and digital artists to facilitate partnerships and produce new pieces of creative work for the web. These partnerships ensure that skills are pooled and shared and the world of creativity on the internet is revealed, explored and discussed. In 2005, Electric December’s contributors interpreted a theme of Connecting Bristol in response to the Government’s Digital Challenge.
